After so few blogs and emails this year, I thought you should be warned.

There will be new songs, remastered tracks and brand new merch. But before I spill everything we've been hard at work on here, I thought I'd just post some music - in the form of a new widget (if this was a smart phone, of course it would be an App). Enjoy the samples and songs, and brace yourself for next time...

Like Nothing You've Ever Heard

We've all seen this phase: Like Nothing You've Ever Heard. Whenever I read it, I always think "this artist doesn't listen to enough music". That isn't a bad thing until you want to explain to others what you sound like.

Music is highly subjective, and often difficult to explain. But it is quite rare when music comes along that is truly unlike anything we might have heard.

It is said that when Igor Stravinsky first attempted a performance of Le sacre du printemps (or "The Rite of Spring") about a hundred years ago, some of the crowd booed, others argued, fistfights broke out in the aisles, and much of the music was unheard after a point because of the rioting. Eventually the police were brought in to subdue the crowd.

The fact the there is still quite a bit of debate over what exactly happened (and why) at the show that night, leads me to believe that the audience truly experienced something new; they were not at all prepared for it, many of them apparently had no reference for it, and it led to some surprisingly base emotional responses. It also means that you can't blame that sort of thing on rock ;)

Over time, some have said that none of the rioting at Stravinsky's performance ever happened. I think this is also a response to something so new we cannot immediately accept it; so we dismiss it altogether: it never happened. This is akin to those who believe we never walked on the moon. It seems impossible, so it could not have happened. And because we have not been back, in some ways it remains a new idea.

From these examples I glean that perhaps an artist doesn't want to state such a thing - "Like Nothing You've Ever Heard" - unless they want to be unpopular or at least controversial for a decade or so! In any case, as artists and musicians 'new' doesn't happen as often as we'd like in our own creativity, and perhaps we are better off leaving explanations of music style to more objective ears, if we can find them.

A different example of new: What Björk is doing with her new release Biophilia is new, but perhaps not so much musically groundbreaking as technologically (the first App album, I believe). We'll have to wait and hear it all to find out.

Not even what Bach did stylistically was new - he was just a better composer than most writing in his day, and a gifted improvisationalist.

My group Gravity Tree strives to be original, and we're on somewhat of a mission to explore what's new - new to us as musicians, as songwriters. However, we're the first to acknowledge the scores of influences. We hope we've never been misquoted with a "Nothing You've Ever Heard" phrase, and we'd never say it.

I might struggle with what to call the music I make. But I cannot worry too much if anyone has heard that kind of thing before, or if someone thinks it sounds 'old'. Old is as subjective as music itself. Is '90's music old? Are the Beatles old? What about Mozart? More importantly, does it matter?

It may not be "Like Nothing You've Ever Heard", but as long as it is not "Exactly Like Something You Just Heard", I believe I am on the right path.

The best thing to do is to put out the music you enjoy making, and hope others enjoy it also. And listen.

Aiiradio is a web site/station that serves up a lot of tasty independent progressive music (as well as a bit of comedy). We've been giving it a listen of late and liked what we heard, so we were pretty excited when they approached us to put our songs in rotation.

Aim to Please is the first song of ours to be featured on aiiradio.net, but we're sure it won't be the last, and we hope to have more songs from Ultimate Backward included in their prog rock programming. Wait, Remastered, Now Available as FLAC, MP3, AAC

It is the holiday season once again! With Black Friday behind us, and Cyber Monday (plus who knows how many other 'sales events') at hand, you are most likely picking and pondering over gifts and lists. Perhaps you are wrestling over what to get that picky music listener who may already own the entire King Crimson, Yes and/or Flower Kings catalogs. We have a couple of ideas...

Melodic Revolution Records has released Vol.2 of A Progressive Christmas, which features some great, modern prog bands, and even a little Vivaldi. We encourage you to check it out.

Also of note to our fans, the Gravity Tree Ultimate Backward instrumental "Wait", which was featured on the original Melodic Revolution Records release, "A Very Progressive Christmas, Vol.1", is available again this year. Rhapsody and the Delay Effect

Thanks to CDBaby for help with this issue, and to Rhapsody for resolving it on their end in timely fashion.

We should tell you that this and other events had caused us to delay any further music releases. We know some of you have been waiting awhile, and we wanted you to know what has been going on to cause this delay.

We have been concerned about releasing more downloads for a myriad of reasons, and several things led to the delay: Tech issues at Rhapsody and other sites; the 'new' and possibly unstable overhauls going on with sites like MySpace and others; and some recent issues with distribution. (It didn't help that Alan injured himself, causing him to stay off the drums for a number of weeks. Getting back up to speed took a little longer than expected - there is no excuse for sloppy drum tracks!)

Bottom line: It's no good for us to tell you new music is out, and then discover it isn't working right, or isn't available as promised. Our confidence that we had a working pipeline to all our listeners was low. So rather than frustrate you, we put on the brakes, and decided to work on what we could fix, and wait on what we couldn't.

But that's behind us. We're encouraged that things are moving forward with stores and our distributors, and feel better about releasing new music soon. We'll be focusing on getting the songs (and some new merch) out to you in the near future, and our fans and friends who get our newsletter will get a heads-up in advance, and early access before everyone else.

We're working on the release of at least 2 new songs before the end of the year, and some cool merch too. So stay tuned.

Right now the music has mostly clips, but you can hear full length versions of our latest song, "Building", plus a remastered version of "Falling in 3s", and an old favorite (practically a different style altogether, wouldn't you agree?) Minnies Tree.

Here's some trivia: Minnies was actually the very first song Gravity Tree released, way back in the mid-'90's...on red vinyl! The song was eventually re-mixed and included on the album Life or Dessert?.

We think this song is a bit different from what you might expect from us (think 'further out there'), but still represents the Gravity Tree sound. (Perhaps a bit more old school progressive rock than usual? Who are we to say - you can judge soon enough.)

In a recent blog, we talked about a few places to hear full-length cuts of Gravity Tree music (instead of 30 second samples like many places).

We recently posted a remastered version of "Falling in 3s" on a few sites like Boost and ReverbNation. The song originally appeared on our album "Life or Dessert?", but we think this version is a noticeable improvement in fidelity.

How do you shop for new music? It used to be you could hear something on the radio (even progressive rock!), go to a store and get it.

But radio isn't what it used to be, and if your tastes - like ours - run way outside the mainstream, good luck finding one radio station with one show with your favorite genre. So people like us have all gone to the web and to apps like iTunes to find strange, experimentally new music. Sound about right to you?

Here's one problem: so many places just want to give you a 30 second clip (understandable given all the piracy, but a little frustrating when trying to figure out what the song is really like). Depending on where the store edits the song for the clip, that might not include the verse or the chorus or the main theme of the piece.

When we're able to control what clips get put up, Gravity Tree tries to feature the 'best' or most important part of the song. But we know a lot of you just want to hear the whole thing, for free, just like radio (well sort of).

You can now go to the Gravity Tree page on MySpace and ReverbNation to hear the full-length version of our latest song, "Building".

There are several helpful links to get you over the stores that carry "Building" on these pages, should you decide to own it for yourself (hint, hint), stick it on your iPod, or whatever you do with your downloads (?). Hopefully you'll like what you hear. We're working on making it available for listening on Facebook soon as well.

We're also working on something even better than just listening to the songs on these sites...but that news will have to wait ;-)

In our case, we have little to report this week. Two songs out of the five have made some small progress - less than we'd like. These 2 are 95% written and all the delays are in the musical arrangements, and the recording process.

Meanwhile Alan worked on some tech stuff in the studio, while trying to improve his drum sound (there's always room for improvement in just about any endeavor). And we got some UPC data worked out (because we don't do it much and so forget) for the next releases. And if we lost you on the last point, then you know how we felt doing it ;-)

And that's it; the week flew by...

Anyone check out the new Beta version of Napster? For the most part, we like the new layout, especially the darker color scheme (for those who care ;-o). btw they actually pay artists for downloads now - it's completely legit these days.

Sometimes you just can't get back into the studio...

Besides trying to finish taxes (!), last week found me working out a few ideas for our upcoming video.

Gravity Tree is also working up some new T-Shirt designs which just might see the light of day this time around ;-)

All these tangents, of course, were necessary, if not always well-planned. Back in the studio we go once again. Hint: the next song's acronym is FTWHC...we'd like to hear from any of you on what that might stand for. Until next time...

Download Interference

In this week's update, we wanted to mention that we recently added our 8 minute+ song (epic?) "Interference" to the Gravity Tree downloads now available at the Boost Independent Music shop. (The song Interference is originally from the album Ultimate Backward .)

We're a featured artist there as well. You can find us easily, by choosing "progressive" from the "browse by music style" menu on the site's main page.

In addition to the music-in-progress, Gravity Tree has been updating their pages at ReverbNation.com. We've been steadily climbing the charts over there, which is a little strange for us - even appearing on charts. We'll try not to get too popular ;-)

While we've made some good progress on one especially, we're withholding a release date for a little longer, as drummer/keyboardist Alan splits his time between band recording and a remix project (we'll talk about that in the future).

All the new material will ultimately be available on the next full length album. Many will be available beforehand as digital singles at shops like Boost Independent Music. Station IDs

Several weeks ago now Gravity Tree was asked to do a 'station ID', if you will, for a progressive rock website. So if you're listening to Power of Prog and you hear us talking at you, don't be too surprised.

We're back to work on new songs after unexpected delays that kept Alan out of the studio for about a month. Four new songs are in the works and barring any further delays, the first of them should make it to download sites in the next few weeks. Look out for it!

Gravity Tree in 2009: A Last Look

As we say goodbye to 2009, we remember some fairly amazing things that happened for us. It's been a busy year for Gravity Tree, and we hope it was a good year for all of you.
Way back in February we released a 3-song EP (for free! Drop us a note if you've been a fan and didn't get it);

In the spring and over the summer we hit some big numbers on the music sites, including one million plays on the Progressive chart at NumberOneMusic; and were making some good progress again at last, on writing and recording for the new album.

In September, we released a brand new song, "Building", as a web-only download (you have your copy, right?). Among other things, it hit #1 in its genre on RadioIndy, and #6 on the NumberOneMusic.com progressive chart. Yeah, we were surprised too - should we be worried?

At the end of November, we released a newly remastered version of our song "Wait" appearing on Melodic Revolution Records' new holiday compilation disc, "A Very Progressive Christmas: Vol. I". ("A Very Progressive Christmas" was the fifth compilation disc we've been a part of over the last seven years.) As of this writing, it is still in the Top 5 selling albums at the Mindawn music site. The end of the year finds us at work on more new songs. Ultimate Backward review from Expose Magazine

Finally getting to post the Exposé magazine review of our CD, Ultimate Backward. It's also found on the reviews page of our official site, and of course on our MySpace blog. Here's the review...

Gravity Tree is one of the more interesting progressive bands around, a duo who covers all the instruments of a four piece band, plus vocals; and they do this live too. Guitarist Linc plays a combo-guitar that has both bass and guitar strings, and separate pickups for each, allowing him to play both parts simultaneously. Drummer Alan Nu handles a keyboard with his right hand and drums with the others, as well as using various drum controlled triggers. The result is an amazing full band sound from just two players. Both provide the vocals. Some readers may remember "Aim to Please," their contribution to the Bay Prog Sampler disc that was included with issue #24; in fact that song has gone through further refinement in the years since and appears here on this, their second album, along with nine other original compositions. Their material bears a stamp of currency, yet also features the conceptual ideals of classic progressive rock. Their influences likely include Zappa, Happy The Man, Van der Graaf, and Gentle Giant, which they assimilate well as they explore new musical territory; most of the songs are long and labyrinthine, and rarely settle down into a pattern for very long. In that respect, I am reminded of another current band, The Underground Railroad. Familiarity with Ultimate Backward will require a few repeated plays, but over the haul the listener will be rewarded. This is a solid second effort.

Road to the Next Gravity Tree Album

After a short break (hence the lack of newsletters and not much blogging), us crazy musicians at Gravity Tree are now back to work on new songs, most of which will be included in our 3rd CD release, about nine months from now. But you won't have to wait that long for new prog rock output from us. Gravity Tree is going to try and release a new web-version of each song as it's finished. Hopefully that means you'll see a new mp3 download from us, available every couple of months or so, on the usual sites.

We probably won't release all of the material from the upcoming album this way, mostly because some of them are shaping up to be quite long. But we might release a "part 1" of a piece as a download. Expect the first new release before the end of January. I'll post a specific date once we get close. These also might be a little different mixes or a different form or arrangement than what shows up on the album. So you might find something unique in the download versions.

One more thing: Everyone on our official mailing list or Yahoo group, and all of our MySpace friends will get a message when each song is available. If you're a member of the Gravity Tree street team, however, you'll receive most of these mp3s for FREE.

Any prog rock fans in the house?

What better way to say hello than to mix music genre slang. Except to say, hello and welcome to the OFFICIAL Gravity Tree blog. But wait, why does this blog exist? And who writes this thing?

The second question first: Some of you know me as GravityDrmmr. Other folks call me Alan. I participate in a music group (as there are all kinds of groups, I had to specify it as music in nature) called Gravity Tree. We play a fairly non-commercial blend of guitar-drenched noise many folks call progressive rock, or prog rock, if you will. Some call it art rock, avant-prog, or any number of other things but by now you've gotten the idea.

There are a number of reasons why we decided to come late to the blog party and start one of these things.
One was that I wanted a place to communicate to fans and interested bystanders without all the usual glitter, hype, pomp and what-have-you. So there aren't any flashing banners, pop-ups or swirling advertisements insisting that you buy our stuff or someone else's.

Another reason was that we didn't really have a stand-alone blog. There's a news page on our website, but the site's gotten fairly large and there are other more interesting pages to be found there. We have a blog on MySpace, but we're finding a number of fans just aren't on MySpace or just don't like it up there. This blog is for those folks.

I'll try to keep it up-to-date with any really critical band news. But mostly I'll probably ramble on about music, ours and others. We'll see where this goes.
